FOR THE FIRST TIME A SMART BUOY WITH OIL SENSOR IS DELIVERING DATA VIA SATELLITE IN OPEN SEA CONDITIONS IN THE BALTIC SEA

A smart navigation buoy system has started in October to deliver real-time measurement data via satellite of oil and some other water quality parameters in the Baltic Sea water. It is located in south of Helsinki in the Gulf of Finland. The monitoring data gives later great advantages to oil spill response actions of authorities and it eases revealing illegal oil discharges. The system is part of the SYKE’s Grace project cooperation and it is made by Meritaito Ltd. The data is freely available in Internet.

The test data of the smart navigation buoy system is freely available in www.luodedata.fi

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

THE PORTAL

What exactly is the Portal?

The Portal is an Edge Server, a LoRaWAN™ gateway and a satellite modem and antenna all wrapped into one low-cost, fully integrated, easy to use package.

What does the Portal do?

The Portal enables you to deploy up to a hundred sensors (LoRaWAN™-based) within 15km (~10miles) range of the Portal. The Portal allows LoRa™ satellite connectivity in remote industries where cellular networks are not present.

What is LoRaWAN?

LoRaWAN™ is a low power wide area network (LPWAN) specification intended for wireless battery operated things in a regional, national or global network. It is built using Semtech’s LoRa™ modulation scheme.

Will Fleet help me to set up the Portal?

Our team is always available to help you get set up fast. Your business is unique and our goal is to make it as simple as possible to connect, that’s why we’ve designed the Portal as a plug and play device. Contact us and let us help get your particular application up and running today.

Where can I buy compatible sensors?

LoRaWAN™ based sensors can be found from a range of online suppliers. Our team is happy to help source compatible sensors to enable your application – just contact us and let us know what your business needs.

In which countries can I connect sensors and Portals?

Fleet leverages existing satellite networks so you have connectivity anywhere in the world with a view of the sky!

What is LoRaWAN and what kind of range can I expect?

LoRaWAN™ is a long range, wireless network architecture specifically designed to cost-effectively connect low-power sensors (typically sensors that can run on coin batteries for years). It is a two-way communications system that works well within a range of 15km (~10 miles) in ideal conditions.

How can I reduce data costs?

We do that for you! The Portal comes embedded with NanoAnalytics, our proprietary software that enables the optimisation of the satellite bandwidth. It does so using a well-orchestrated mix of edge analytics and compression – this means we never send raw data through the satellite, only analysed and compressed data, saving you money on connectivity! Since you pay per connected device rather than on a plan, you always have total control over your spend.

How much data can I send?

That is totally up to you! Most of the sensor data will be analysed, filtered and compressed. We only send the data you need.

How do I install the Portal and sensors? Can I connect sensors I already have in the field?

The Portal is very easy to set up – mount it on a pole out of reach of local wildlife. Power it on by pressing the power button and you’re on the satellite network. Log into the Portal configuration app on your phone or tablet, and connect to the Portal through either USB, WiFi or Bluetooth. Simply list your sensor IDs in the settings and they’ll automatically connect. Then it’s just a matter of positioning the sensors where you need them. If your sensors are not yet LoRa™ enabled or LoRaWAN™ is not for you and you are looking for another type of technology to connect the sensor, contact us.

Will the Portal survive a harsh environment?

Portal enclosures are rated at IP65, come with IP67-rated connectors and are designed to function in extreme temperatures (-20C to 50C).

How do I power the Portal?

The Portal can be powered with a 12V DC power supply if you have it. Alternatively, an 80W solar panel setup can be used (available for purchase separately).

Which satellites are you using? Is the service reliable?

Fleet are using Iridium and Inmarsat services, which are well-established worldwide. We add our secret sauce to the mix to make them efficient without impacting the service. Stay tuned, we’re also launching our own birds!

Who do I contact if my Portal stops working?

Our dedicated teams are on standby to provide timely assistance. Just contact our team.

COST OPTIMISATION

What does Fleet offer to optimise satellite costs?

At Fleet, we’re passionate about reducing satellite IoT costs so you can connect more remote devices for less. Fleet has developed edge computing software to optimise the cost of using traditional satellite links when trying to get non-critical data from objects.  Traditional satellite connectivity is expensive and being able to sort critical data (voice, internet, critical systems) from delay-tolerant data (sensor networks) and optimising the latter by 80% means you can do more sensing, obtain more data and make better decisions on the critical things.

How can I reduce sensor data costs?

We do that for you! NanoAnalytics enables the optimisation of the satellite bandwidth. It does so by a well-orchestrated mix of edge analytics and compression – this means we never send raw data through the satellite, only analysed and compressed data, saving you money on connectivity! Our customers save up to 80% on satellite connectivity using NanoAnalytics. We make it simple to send only the data you actually need via satellite.

Is it possible to add more sensors to my existing modem with Fleet’s solution?

Absolutely! At Fleet we believe in the power of data to make better decisions, so by reducing your current costs of connecting by 80% means you can do more sensing for the same cost as today! If you are thinking to start deploying LWPAN solutions such as LoRa™, contact us at sales@fleet.space
